Why Do Chiropractors Take X-Rays?
I’m Dr. Jean-Marc Slak, and I’d like to explain why chiropractors take X-rays.
Firstly, we don’t X-ray everyone; we only X-ray those who need it. By “need it,” I mean that seeing what’s on the X-rays will help us determine the best course of care. This helps our patients transition from their initial presentation to fully functional, enjoying life to the fullest.
We take X-rays to identify misalignments and dysfunctions so we can help our patients achieve the best results as quickly as possible. Another crucial reason for taking X-rays is to determine if there are contraindications. Some conditions may prevent us from performing certain adjustments or might even mean another healthcare professional should treat the patient. X-rays help us make these determinations.
It’s important to note that not everyone gets X-rays when they visit the chiropractor. For example, children and infants generally do not get X-rayed in a chiropractic office. We would only request X-rays for a child if there has been trauma that might suggest a fracture or broken bone, which would contraindicate our usual treatments. Fortunately, this is very rare.
Another scenario where we might not take new X-rays is if a patient has recent X-rays from another provider. If you’ve had X-rays taken elsewhere within the past couple of weeks, you can bring them in, and we’ll use those. I may need to take additional views if your specific concerns indicate it, but otherwise, we can work with what you have.
In summary, not everyone needs X-rays. Most adults will need them, but the decision is always based on individual needs and circumstances.
