I’m Dr. Jean-Marc Slak here in Burlington. A really important study just came out this week in the Journal of the American Association Pediatric Edition. A very serious journal, a good source, great study, but really important results.
What these people did was look at the brain: they did MRIs of the brains of children. They compared children’s brains those whose lives included screen-time and without. They found that screen time affected the way the brain gets hardwired. Specifically, the gray and white matter didn’t wire quite correctly.
What that means, to cut directly to the conclusion here, kids spend too much time on the screen, too much really means any, they can have problems with cognition. Their thinking is going to be diminished. Their ability to learn, their language skills, and their ability to write and perform in school have shown an impact.
The rule that these researchers are saying that should be followed is no screen under three years old. No screen means no phone, no tablets, no TV, no computer, no nothing under three, because it ruins the child’s brain. That’s a plain-language conclusion from this article. This study is very well-done, solid data. At this point, if we want smart kids, we’re going to have to realize that screen time is destroying and really affecting their ability to create the connections inside the brain that make it possible for them to think and learn at a higher level.
So, let’s save our kid’s brains, no screen under three! In Burlington, I’m Doctor Jean-Marc Slak. I can’t wait to see you and your kids.
