Recently, I read several articles, blogs and social media posts on the topic of piriformis pain. Let’s start by describing piriformis pain… simply put, it a pain in the butt. There, I said it. In these posts and articles, there were a few questions about whether chiropractic could help with pain in the glutes and in the butt and in the piriformis; There was also discussion of the connection between piriformis problems and sciatica.
First, there is a condition called a piriformis syndrome. And there is the sciatic nerve that’s right there. The piriformis is a muscle whose job is to rotate your hip outward. When you stand on one leg and twist the other foot outward to the side, you are contracting that piriformis muscle. What often happens is that this deep muscle inside the buttock is traveling right across and right on top of the sciatic nerve. When the piriformis muscle gets into a spasm or gets irritated it can create inflammation around the sciatic nerve which leads to pain into the glute, into the leg, into the calf, even into the foot. That’s sciatica.
This is a kind of problem that is actually best addressed through chiropractic care because chiropractic care enables to rebalance the body, rebalance the frame, reset the nervous system so you can heal most effectively and therefore feel better as quickly as possible. But there’s more because as you feel better, as you heal, your chiropractor is actually helping you to restore better function. That means that the problem is less likely to recur over time.
Now when we’re looking at using chiropractic care and doing corrective work, it’s really important to realize that getting to feel better is a really important initial goal. But really what is the most important thing you can do is to get to the cause of problem, to the root of it and correct it so that you don’t have that problem recur and really affect your life and keep you from doing the things you want to do: enjoying life, playing with your kids, working comfortably, sitting at work. All of the things that get compromised when you have this kind of problems.
To recap, what using chiropractic are to help this pain in the butt means to you is hat you will feel better sooner and you will have the chance of correcting the core issue, the root of the condition. You can not just feel better, but also return to your activities and maintain your new higher level of wellbeing, function and activities!
