I have a question that was asked from me recently, and I thought it deserved a serious answer. The question is can chiropractic help depression? This is very serious because for a lot of people depression is a life-altering problem. There’s many reasons, the current thinking goes into what causes depression and there are many treatments for depression. One of the most common is medication. As you can guess, I’m not enthusiastic about that option.
There are some really well-researched alternatives to that. Exercise has been shown to work better than any drugs. Omega-3s in high doses, high EPAs, have been shown to work better than any drugs. Those are the things that come up to the top of my mind right away. There’s probably some other herbals and nutritional ways of dealing with depression.
But as a chiropractor, I have to think about how the body functions. Now the contemporary thinking about what depression is about is that it’s an abnormal neurological process, abnormal firing of certain nerve endings that creates different levels of certain neurotransmitters, chemicals in the brain that make you feel a certain way, act in a certain way.
If you think about what chiropractic is about, chiropractic is about normalizing nervous system function, right? We look at where the nervous system has interference, and we correct it so that the body’s innate ability to function at its very best is restored. That’s the essence of chiropractic.
So, can chiropractic help depression? Well, clinically, from my experience I’ve seen it help people with depression time and time again. Is chiropractic a treatment for depression? It just isn’t. But it is very effective at normalizing normal brain function.
So here you have it. Go exercise, eat better, ask me questions, I can give you lots of recommendations and get adjusted. Getting adjusted has a profound impact on neurological function, both on the peripheral and the central nervous system. Let’s do it, let’s get straight, let’s get right, so that you can have the best life experience. I can’t wait to see you!
