Sciatica. Can Chiropractic Help?
Today I want to talk about something that is affecting a lot of people. Recently I’ve had a lot of patients coming in with this problem. It’s on the top of my mind. That is sciatica.
What is sciatica? Sciatica is pain coming from the pinching or irritation of a nerve that comes out from the low back, travels under the glute, and down the leg. Typically, sciatica refers to pain stemming from the back, traveling down the leg to the thigh, to the calf, all the way to the foot. It could even involve numbness and weakness.
There are several reasons why sciatica happens. The sciatic nerve travels a long distance. In fact, it is the longest nerve in the body. It can be irritated either by the spine being dysfunctional, by a swelling of the joints as the nerves exit the spine. It could be irritated by a bulging disc. It could be irritated by a tightening of the muscle called the piriformis. It’s a really deep muscle below the glute. Any of those conditions could create the same symptoms of pain in the back, through the glute, into the thigh, and maybe down the leg.
Any of those are very, very manageable with chiropractic care and a combination of appropriate activities that go with that. For each one of you who have problems like this, it’s my job to determine where it’s coming from so we can manage it as effectively and get you better as quickly as possible.
If you have sciatica, yes, you’re going to get better. I’m going to help you. You’re going to do great. If you know people who have sciatica, I can help. Send them in.
